KEYS to Follow After Arthroscopic Shoulder Surgery

  • Wear the sling for 6 weeks. (Unless previously advised otherwise).
    • It is important to rest the arm and allow healing
  • Begin the approved exercises the day after surgery.
    • This consists of a small gentle pendulum the size of a salad place, bending the elbow back and forth, and moving around the wrist.
  • The medications are to treat pain you may have.
    • The ice machine can also provide the most help, which we want patients to use for 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off, every hours. Medication is not required if you do not have pain.
  • You may remove all the shoulder dressings and shower the day after surgery once you have control of your arm after the nerve block.
    • Do not use soaps or scrub the shoulder. Pat completely dry and cover the sutures with simple bandaids.
  • Do NOT start physical therapy until approved.
  • No traveling after surgery unless pre-discussed with the surgical team.
  • For urgent questions please call the office at 415-447-0495 to be connected to Dr. Roache for after hours calls.
